The best Pumpkin Patches in New York

The hot girl summer is gone, Adele is back, and it's officially sad girl fall! It's that time of the year when every single drink produced in the United States gets a pumpkin flavor version, while Marshall’s and TJMaxx are overdosing on pumpkin candles. Everything orbits around this orange round ribbed skin squash in October! It's also time to plan your trip to a farm upstate for a classic Pumpkin Patch day!

Pumpkin Patch is a fall tradition event in the US when families, couples, and friends spend the day on a farm trying to find the best pumpkin for their jack-o-lantern project. It’s a great excuse to hang out with your favorite people and have delicious homemade donuts or an apple cider. Unfortunately, for obvious reasons, members of the LGBTQ+ community don't always feel welcome in traditional events like this. That's why we listed a few friendly farms that had shown support to our community before. Let’s occupy every place and every Holiday, people!

5 "Hocus Pocus" events in New York to celebrate Halloween

Queens County Farm

The Queens County Farm Museum is a New York City Landmark, and they are hosting Pumpkin Patch events daily until October 30. On the weekends, the farm serves apple ciders, homemade donuts, and pie.

Compared to the other options, the Queens County Farm has probably the easiest access if you depend on public transportation. You can take the Q46 or QM6 bus to visit the farm.

Back in July of this year, the Queens County Farm promoted a Pride on the Farm event, with drag queens reading history for kids all day long.

Barton Orchards

Located in Poughquag, the Barton Orchards is promoting an adult-friendly event called Boos and Booze Drag Show, hosted by Summer Orlando and Barbara Streetsand! Which is also going to be a Halloween party, and the best costume will win a cash prize.

Baston Orchards have animals, apples, a tap room, donuts, ice cream, and much more to keep you entertained and satisfied. You can get there by train taking the Metro-North Harlem Line Pawling from Grand Central Station. You will most likely need to change trains at Southeast station to Pawling. Once in Pawling, Barton Orchards is a 15-minute drive away, and you can get a local taxi!

Demarest Farms

In 2020, they hosted an LGBTQ+ night during the Film Festival Summer. Now, they are hosting their traditional Pumpkin Patch right next to their petting zoo. Yes, I said petting zoo! You will have the chance to start a friendship with goats, alpacas, sheep, and pigs.

Besides that, Demarest has a haunted hayride and a forgotten graveyard nestled in the apple trees! You can get there by bus, taking the ShortLine Hudson in Port Authority to Newburgh.

Wilklow Orchards

This season, the Big Gay Hudson Valley is promoting an Out on the Farm event at the Wilklow Orchards. "Gather with your queer family, friends, and pets for a night Out on the Farm! Our favorite family-friendly event of the fall season is making a return for 2021," says the description.

Wilklow has tractor rides, apple cider and donuts, pumpkin painting, fresh pizza, and alcoholic beverages waiting for you. The only bad thing is transportation. You can try to get a train in Grand Central to Poughkeepsie, but you will need a car to drive you across the Hudson River.

Here's a farm you should NOT go on any occasion: Liberty Ridge Farm. They refused to host a same-sex wedding in 2014, and they were fined for their homophobic decision. After that, they opened their doors to LGBTQ-wedding events but didn't stop donating to a group that opposes same-sex marriage
