October 5th is Do Something Nice National Day, and there's nothing nicer than helping others! So to celebrate the day's spirit, we listed 8 organizations in New York that are working to help members of the LGBTQ+ community facing difficult situations right now.

Why should you help? Discrimination against LGBTQ+ people negatively impacts their health, careers, and social relationships. Here are some of the main issues affecting the community:

  • Family rejection resulting from sexual orientation or gender identity is one of the top causes of youth homelessness in the United States.

  • A reliance on chosen family, due to family rejection and discrimination, creates social vulnerability for LGBT elders.

  • Trans people face a legal system that often does not protect us from discrimination based on our gender identity.

  • Trans people experience violence at rates far greater than the average person.

  • 22% of trans people and 32% of trans people of color have no health insurance coverage.

  • 15% of LGBTQ Americans report postponing or avoiding medical treatment due to discrimination

  • LGBTQ Americans have experienced significant mental health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organizations below are working to provide a better and safer life for members of the LGBTQ+ community, fighting against at least one of the issues listed above.
