Broadway Tickets & Best Shows in NYC

Broadway has been an important venue to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues for a long time. Even before StonewallThe Boys in the Band (1968) by Mart Crowley dared to bring gay stories to the main stage. Bette Middler used her superstar status to celebrate gay liberation in The Ritz (1975) written by Terrence McNally. When everybody was dancing' Macho Man' in the clubs, Torch Song Trilogy (1978) by Harvey Fierstein gave voice to the effeminate gay kids. The Normal Heart (1985) by Larry Kramer threw light on the government's indifference and the public toward the AIDS plague. Not too long ago, Kinky Boots (2012) sang against homophobia in a cast full of drag queens, and A Strange Loop (2022), by Michael R. Jackson, led L Morgan Lee to be the first trans performer to be nominated for a Tony Award.

The LGBTQ+ community is part of Broadway's history, and let's be clear: there's no musical theater without gay people. If you are in New York City, try to see at least one of the many shows in town.

How to find the best and most affordable tickets?

The tickets for Broadway shows can go from $49 to $2,000, depending on the show, date, and where you’re buying. StubHub and SeatGeek are great options to find affordable tickets online without ending up losing your money for a scam. Both websites work as a reseller point, offering tickets from people who often had to cancel last-minute or won’t be able to make it to their ticket date.

Or you can always try to find a cheaper ticket behind the red stairs at Time Square, where the TKTS Discount Booth is located. The company sells Broadway and Off-Broadway tickets for the same day only. It’s all about luck! If the musical of your desire didn't sell out on that day, TKTS will offer tickets with a more significant discount a couple of hours before the show's opening time. Usually, you can get great deals for classics like Chicago, The Phantom of Opera, and Wicked.

How to sign up for the Broadway lottery?

Most Broadway shows offer an online lottery for their tickets. They raffle a small number of tickets before each performance so you can buy them with a really good discount. Every show has its own different rules and prices for its lotteries.

Are Broadway tickets cheaper at the box office?

The other option is waiting for last-minute tickets in front of the theater. Some plays will offer the possibility of paying less for a seat with a partial view or even suggest that you stay up in the back of the audience. So again, it's all about luck.

What to wear to a Broadway show?

A Broadway show is always a special occasion, but there is no required dress code. You'll probably be most comfortable in casual business wear.

How far in advance should I purchase Broadway tickets?

Many shows will have tickets for performances a few days in advance or even on the same day. However, some shows are more popular than others and tickets can sell out really fast. You can always check their website online to see how far in advance you should buy yours.

Are theatres open seven days a week on Broadway?

No. The majority of New York theatres are closed on Monday nights.

When do new shows open on Broadway?

The majority of Broadway productions tend to open either in the fall (October / November) or in spring (March / April).
