Fire Island, Bros, and two more gay romcoms to watch in 2022

It’s a great time for queer representation on the big screen! Four different movies will tell stories of LGBTQ+ couples, with casts majorly queer, making it official: 2022 is the year of the gay romantic comedies! 

“Bros” with Billy Eichnner and Luke Macfarlane 

Bros is probably the one getting more buzz in the media. The comedy was written by Billy Eichner, who is also playing the main character, and it’s the first film with an all-queer cast. Even actors playing straight characters are part of the LGBTQ+ community in real life. Bros' cast also features Luke Macfarlane,Ts Madison, Monica Raymund, Guillermo Díaz, Guy Branum, Symone, and Dot-Marie Jones. 

The first trailer was released on April 27, and the movie is set to premiere on September 30. Bros is about two men with commitment problems attempting to be in a relationship. Nick Stoller, from Neighbors and 

Forgetting Sarah Marshall, is credited as a co-writer and director. Watch the trailer for Bros:

“Fire Island” with Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang 

Fire Island, premiering on June 3, 2022, on Hulu, was recorded in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and - wait for it - Fire Island. The comedy centers around a group of queer best friends, spending the Summer in the Fire Island Pines. A sudden change of events tests their bonds as a chosen family to the limit.

The cast brings Bowen Yang, Nick Adams, Margareth Cho, and Matt Rogers. Fire Island is so far Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with 100% from 8 reviews.

“Crush” with Rowan Blanchard and Auliʻi Cravalho

Crush, written by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham, was released on April 29, on Hulu. The film stars Rowan Blanchard and Auliʻi Cravalho telling the story of a teen girl who joins her high-school track team to get closer to her crush, but then finds out she is getting closer to another teammate. 

The movie was originally called Love in Color, but the name was changed shortly before its premiere. Crush got an audience score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Watch the trailer for Crush:

“My Fake Boyfriend” with Keiynan Lonsdale and Dylan Sprouse 

Set to be released in theaters on June 17, My Fake Boyfriend is the result of a collaboration between Lionsgate and Buzzfeed. The story is about Andrew, a young gay man who creates a fake boyfriend for himself but ends up falling in love with a real-life version of him. 

Andrew is interpreted by Keiynan Lonsdale. The movie cast also features Dylan Sprouse, Sarah Hyland, and Marcus Rosner. Watch the trailer for My Fake Boyfriend:  

“Anything is Possible” with Eva Reign and Renée Elise Goldsberry

Bonus: Billy Porter is making his directorial debut with Anything is Possible, which is a Prime Video original, set to arrive in July 2022

Anything is Possible follows the story of two high school seniors falling in love: Khal, a straight cis boy, and Kelsa, a trans girl. Eva Reign was cast as Kelsa, and Abubakr Ali will be Khal. Broadway icon Renée Elise Goldsberry is also involved in the project.
