Drag Queens March

In 1994, the drag community was informed by the committee in charge of the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots celebration that they weren’t invited to be part of the New York City Pride Parade. The event's organization wanted to portray a family-friendly version of the gay men and women in the United States on Pride. So the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence created the New York City Drag March, held annually on the Friday before the Pride Parade.

One of the leaders of the protest was Brian Griffin, who was famously known in the community as Harmonie Moore Must Die. He was a member of the AIDS advocacy group ACT UP and always believed in the power of drag to confront intolerance. Gilbert Baker, known as the designer of the Pride Flag, was also part of the creation of the Drag March in NYC.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, or the Order of Perpetual Indulgence is a charity organization that uses drag and religious imagery to fight sexual intolerance.

The Drag March starts in Tompkins Square Park and ends in front of the Stonewall Inn. Differently from the Pride Parade, this is purposefully a non-corporate event.
