Broadway is back, and so are the countless stage musical adaptations of Hollywood blockbusters and shows inspired by female icons with a strong personal drama. Your favorite Broadway actors soon will be fighting to be cast in Game of Thrones, Hidden Figures, Silver Lining Playbook, or Once Upon a One More Time, which will tell a story of a classic fairy tale princess using Britney Spears' songs. They are all coming to a theatre in New York!

Hidden Figures

The story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson - the Black female NASA mathematicians who were crucial to the Space Race missions of the 1960s - is now being adapted to a musical. The show will be directed by Schele Williams

In 2016, Taraji P. Johnson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe starred in the movie directed by Theodore Melfi, based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly. Hidden Figures received three Oscar nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay.

Silver Linings Playbook

The producer James D. Stern has acquired the rights to adapt Silver Linings Playbook (2012) into a musical. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there's not much information about this project except that the plan is to premiere on Broadway. 

The movie Silver Linings Playbook was adapted from Matthew Quick's novel of the same name, and it gave Jennifer Lawrence an Oscar for Best Actress. The musical production is in good hands - James D. Stern has won best musical Tonys for The Producers and Hairspray. 

Game of Thrones

Who’s ready to see Daenerys Targaryen belting the word "Dracarys" on stage? Game of Thrones: The Musical is being developed with plans to premiere on Broadway one day. But for now, the production is set to debut in 2023 in London and Australia. 

Game of Thrones was a massive hit-show on HBO, based on George R.R. Martin's bestselling book series. The author will be responsible for the project alongside Duncan Macmillan, who adapted George Orwell's "1984" in 2013.

The Notebook 

Theatre: TBA
Date: 2022

Honestly, I don't know why it took so long to transform The Notebook into a musical! The show, based on the 2004 film and on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, will premiere first in Chicago in March 2022. But the producers are aiming for a Broadway season. 

The score is signed by Ingrid Michaelson, and the book was written by Bekah Brunstetter, who also worked on the TV show This Is Us.

Once Upon a One More Time

Theatre: TBA
Date: 2022

This musical comedy has everything to be a big hit: Cinderella, Snow White, and other fairytale princesses will discover a new way of living while singing Britney Spears songs. My inner gay child is screaming inside of me right now! 

The production will premiere in Chicago at the end of this month, where it should stay until January 2022. The plan, according to Broadway.com, is to head to Broadway right after. 

In case you are wondering, Britney gave her blessing to this project. "I'm so excited to have a musical with my songs – especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore," said the Princess of Pop. Also, Free Britney! 

Almost Famous

Date: TBA

The production was one of Covid-19's victims on Broadway. The producers were all set to begin previews in October 2020, but unfortunately, they postponed. Can we please get a new date already? 

Almost Famous musical will feature music by Tom Kitt, who has recently worked on If/Then and Head Over Hills, and a book by Cameron Crowe, who wrote the original screenplay for the 2000 film based on his own life.

The Queen's Gambit

The Netflix TV show, based on Walter Tevis' novel from 1983, is set to take the stage. According to Variety, Level Forward is developing a musical adaptation of the story. 

The Queen's Gambit was the most-watched scripted miniseries in 2020, with over 62 million viewers in the first month. A quarantine pleaser! The story is about Beth Harmon, an orphan chess prodigy who struggles to overcome addiction. 

The Music Man 

Theatre: Winter Garden
Date: December 2021

Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) and Sutton Foster (Shrek: The Musical) are starring in the Broadway revival of The Music Man. The previews will start on December 20, but the play will officially open on February 10, 2022. 

Four-time Tony winner Jerry Zaks is directing the show, with choreography by Tony winner Warren Carlyle. The story centers around a con artist who arrives in River City and falls in love with the librarian. The original show was a hit on Broadway in 1957, and it was adapted to a movie in 1962. 

Plaza Suite 

Theatre: Hudson
Date: February 22, 2022

Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker are ready to go back on stage together after 20 years. The real-life couple is starring in Plaza Suite, a comedy about marriage. 

The production was set to begin previews the day after the March 12 shutdown was announced. John Benjamin Hickey is the director of Plaza Suite - He previously directed Cabaret in 1998 and The Normal Heart in 2011. 

Birthday Candles 

Theatre: American Airlines
Date: March 18, 2022

This is not a musical, but the play has Debra Messing as a woman questioning her insignificance in the universe from her 17th birthday until she is 101. Do I really need to justify why the play is on the list now? 

Noah Haidle wrote this play. He is a playwright and screenwriter who has won three Lincoln Center Lecompte Du Nouy awards with his Off-Broadway plays. 

Take Me Out 

Theatre: Helen Hayes
Date: March 22, 2022

Jesse Williams, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Patrick J. Adams are in the revival of the Tony-winning comedy Take Me Out. The play tells the story of a gay baseball player coming out of the closet. 

Written by Richard Greenberg, Take Me Out takes on homophobia, racism, class, and masculinity in the world of sports. The Broadway revival is directed by Scott Ellis, nominated for the Tony Award as Best Director nine times.

Funny Girl 

Theatre: August Wilson Theatre
Date: March 26, 2022

Beanie Feldstein will star on the first Broadway revival of Funny Girl since the original 1964 production. The musical tells the story of Fanny Brice, one of the most famous American comedians in the '20s. 

The musical is highly anticipated, and it promises to be a big hit in 2022. Don't forget: Funny Girl was responsible for revealing Barbra Streisand to the whole world.

Dancin' 

Theatre: TBA
Date: 2022-2023

On March 27, 1978, Dancin opened on Broadway with music from Mozart, Bach, Neil Diamond, and Melissa Manchester. One of many with Bob Fosse's signature, the show was nominated for seven and won two Tony Awards, including Best Choreography. 

Joey Parnes and Nicole Fosse, the daughter of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, are the producers involved. Wayne Cilento, an original cast member of the 1978 production, will direct the show

13 Going on 30 

Theatre: TBA
Date: TBA

The 2004 hit movie about a teenage girl who is transformed into a 30-year-old version of herself is coming to Broadway. When? Well, that's a tricky question. The production has been in the works since 2016 but has yet to release an opening date. 

Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer starred in the 2004 film, always remembered by the iconic Thriller flash mob.

Bombshell 

Theatre: TBA
Date: TBA 

Steven Spielberg is the producer of the stage adaptation of the TV series Smash, which aired in 2012-13. Smash was centered on the creation process of a musical about Marilyn Monroe's life, Bombshell. Now, this fictional musical is about to become a reality. 

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote over two dozen songs for the TV show, will provide the score. Yes, the rumors are true: "Let Me Be Your Star" will be used in the stage musical. Don't worry! 

The Devil Wears Prada 

Theatre: TBA
Date: 2022

If transforming one of the most iconic films from the 2000s into a musical wasn't enough, The Devil Wears Prada will feature songs by Elton John. The direction is by Anna D. Shapiro, who won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Director of a Play with August: Osage County.

A Chicago tryout is scheduled to premiere on July 19, 2022. If everything goes well, the musical will come to Broadway right after.

The Great Gatsby

The goddess Florence Welch is teaming up with Thomas Bartlett and Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok to adapt F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby into a musical play. "It contains some of my favorite lines in literature. Musicals were my first love, and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald's broken romanticism. It is an honor to have been offered the chance to recreate this book in song", said Florence. 

Speaking of which, The Great Gatsby entered the public domain this year. 

Magic Mike 

Theatre: TBA
Date: TBA

Channing Tatum is one of the producers involved in the musical adaptation that has been in development for seven years. Seven years! Magic Mike was previously scheduled to premiere in Boston in November 2019, but it got canceled a couple of months before. And then 2020 arrived for all of us… 

The teaser, however, is still online. 

The Nanny 

Theatre: TBA
Date: TBA 

The popular '90s sitcom series, starring Fran Drescher, is getting a stage adaptation pretty soon. At least it's what Drescher has been saying in recent interviews - "I'm very, very thrilled we're coming out the other side, and that theater is going to come back, and we'll be almost ready to launch The Nanny musical on Broadway as well," she said.

To make the production even more exciting, Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger, from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, are writing the score. We're so ready for this one!
