5 reasons to try TomboyX, a queer, female-owned, and gender-neutral underwear brand

Back in 2013, Fran Dunaway and Naomi Gonzalez noticed a lack of button-up shirts that would fit their bodies in the market and decided to produce fitted polos and shirts for a queer audience. Thanks to a Kickstarted campaign, Fran and Naomi received $76,000 and TomboyX was born.

After a few months in the market, TomboyX shifted exclusively to gender-neutral underwear and loungewear. We're talking about bras, bikinis, briefs, boxer briefs, hoodies, and pajamas created for women, men, and those in between. It's been over a decade, and TomboyX is still thriving - as it should!

TomboyX's active tops and briefs underwear are some of their best-selling products. You'll find them in different shapes and prints, from 3XS to 6X. We especially love their new collection Happy Camper

Besides being a queer-owned business with excellent products, there are other reasons why you should buy from TomboyX. We listed 5 of them!

Sustainability

As of early 2022, TomboyX is B Corp certified, which means they are meeting and maintaining high sustainability standards for environmental impact, employment, and governance. TomboyX is also working on a GHG emissions reduction plan for the next 3-5 years, and always discussing ways to be more environmental-friendly.

TomboyX HQ also got a Gold LEED Certified, which is given to buildings that have a reduced impact on the environment by generating less waste and using less water and power. Unfortunately, brands like TomboyX are still an exception so they get extra points for that!

Diversity

TomboyX's executive level is comprised of 80% women, while 63% of them identify as LGBTQ and/or minority. Also, 39% of their team identify as LGBTQ and/or minority.

" We champion diversity and inclusion; everyone is welcome and appreciated. We celebrate our differences, foster a sense of belonging, and show our commitment through our words and actions."

The brand is known for paying its staff above-industry-standard wages. "Both because we believe that’s the right thing to do, and because that’s how we can raise the industry standards."

Manufacturing

TomboyX work with facilities that are certified by WRAP and the Fair Labor Association, two of the leading organizations guaranteeing fair treatment and competitive wages for factory workers.

While many fast-fashion brands are accused of exploration at their factories, TomboyX ensures they are only working with good companies and visit them every two years for an inspection.

Quality Material

TomboyX is constantly studying new ways to use organic and recyclable fabrics in as many designs as possible without compromising quality. They have BCI-certified suppliers, to guarantee that the cotton they’re using comes from a sustainable and farmer-centric process, they have also obtained OEKO-Tex certification for all of our cotton products.

Another material present in most of TomboyX's creations is TENCEL™ Modal, which is naturally biodegradable, breathable, and durable. "It’s also unbelievably soft".

Queer-power

We've mentioned a few times how important it's to buy from queer artists and entrepreneurs. TomboyX is not only queer-owner but also designed for the queer community.

In its mission description, TomboyX affirms to be a "queer-founded brand dedicated to empowering our LGBTQ+ community year-round and advocating for equal representation and celebration of all people".

Here are some of our favorite products from TomboyX!
