One of the most recognizable fashion capitals of the world, New York has a distinct and very eclectic style. From classic high-fashion brands to retro-grunge Gen-Z designs, the city invites you to challenge your wardrobe every day. To help us understand and explore New York City dress code, we talked with stylist and model Jonzu Jones, who has had his work featured in magazines like Vogue, Elle, and Harper's Bazaar.

Jonzu

A rare case of a New Yorker born and raised in New York, Jonzu Jones says his passion for fashion started "at birth". "Some of my earliest memories are of me making looks and models from fashion magazine cutouts," he says. As you probably imagine by now, Jonzu followed his passion and went to study design in high school and college when he grew older. "While studying in college, I interned and assisted a few stylists and editors. I thought design was my calling but quickly fell in love with styling more and figured I could use my design skills as a stylist", he says.

Jonzu's career started "randomly", but soon he became one of fashion photographers' favorite stylists in NYC. "I was following model Devin Clark, pre ANTM. He was building his book and saw my designs. He reached out in need of a wardrobe for a shoot. Next thing I knew, I was styling my first shoot - pretty blindly but went by intuition. At the time, I was still learning from being an assistant, but I figured things out as I went."

His personal style is "very sex-positive mood" and certainly stands out from the crowd - even in New York. "I've been into showing skin but in unconventional ways. Slashes in unusual places on garments, sexy cuts, incorporating fetish wear", Jonzu explains.

NYC Style

"NY fashion is completely individual. There is definitely the standard all-black uniform that is seen quite a bit, but every neighborhood has its own flavor".

Golden Rule of Styling

"ACCESSORIES! Something unique or odd can definitely elevate and personalize any look".

Quintessential items

"A good black jacket that works day and night and ideally for multiple seasons, and a good pair of skinny black jeans"

Please, make it stop!

"Flip flops. Not the most practical for most NYC streets and not the most flattering."

Favorite stores in town

"Search and Destroy in St. Marks, more so for the vibe and mood. I'm an eternal punk at heart. Tokio 7 in the East Village. They curate some incredible pieces for a consignment shop and tend to go edgier than most".

Don't overspend!

"Scour the web! There's so much you can find hidden online. Also, I'm a big believer in mixing high and low."

Remember:

"Styling is subjective such as with fashion in general. You can have your own taste and aesthetic and stand by it. There's a market and crowd for everyone and everything!"
