The “My Comrade” 35th Gay Anniversary Exhibit
The underground magazine My Comrade, created in 1987 by drag queen and icon Linda Simpson, is the theme of a new exhibit at Howl! Happening Gallery, in Lower East Side, NY. The opening is scheduled for June 4, from 6–8pm, followed by an afterparty at Parkside Lounge.
During the dark era of the AIDS crisis, My Comrade served as a symbol of hope, defiance and frivolity to the East Village gay scene and beyond. The magazine was founded by Linda Simpson, who is often considered a historian of the drag scene in New York City. Between 1987 and 1994, 10 issues were published. The publication featured photographers, illustrators, and writers of the queer subculture. In 2004, My Comrade made a comeback for two more editions.
“The exhibit includes the release of a coffee-table book about My Comrade from Boo-hooray, as well as a brand new issue of My Comrade, the first in sixteen years. There will be several live events throughout the run of the exhibit.”
Howl! Happening gallery is part of Howl Arts, a nonprofit organization that celebrates past and contemporary culture of the East Village and the Lower East Side.
